Can a bin go on your driveway in Ajax?
Yes, on your own land, on your side of the property line. The Town’s driveway guide puts the end of a driveway on Town-owned boulevard land, so the stretch of driveway by the road can be Town land.
The Town’s road occupancy by-law tells a permit holder not to let storage bins or moving pods occupy the travelled road or the grass boulevard “between November 1 and March 30th of each year”. Its roads page says: “The Town of Ajax does not permit bins, pods or construction material to be stored on the road.” Before planning a spot on a Town road, ask the Town.
Some roads in Ajax are the Region of Durham’s, not the Town’s, and the Region names them in a Regional Roads List of its own. For one of those, ask the Region.

Where is the dump in Ajax?
None of the Region of Durham’s public drop-off sites is in Ajax. The Region’s waste management facilities are in Cannington, in Port Perry and at 1640 Ritson Road North, Oshawa, and they share one set of hours and fees. Every item and fee at the Ritson Road site is in Oshawa dump: hours, fees and what it takes.
A vehicle is weighed on a scale as it drives in and again as it leaves, and staff at the exit scale say what you owe. They take Visa, Mastercard or debit, and no cash. The Region’s Household Special Waste Depot at 1998 Bowmanville Avenue, Bowmanville, takes household hazardous waste only.
Paint, solvents, batteries, propane tanks and other household hazardous waste go in free at a waste management facility, no more than 25 cans or 50 litres from one vehicle in a day. Asbestos is not accepted. Bring hazardous waste on its own: add one chargeable item and the whole load is weighed and paid for. It is the Region of Durham, not the Town, that provides garbage, green bin and yard waste collection in Ajax. Every other week, a home can set out up to four garbage bags or cans, each no heavier than 20 kilograms, at the curb before 7 a.m.
Right now, each bag over the four needs a garbage tag, and the Town sells the Region’s tags at $3.00 source [7] each. Cabinets, lumber, drywall, doors, carpet, underlay and other renovation material are not collected.
Furniture, mattress and appliance removal in Ajax
In Ajax, the Region of Durham takes furniture and other large items from the curb on your regular garbage collection day, every other week, with no appointment, up to two items each time: a sofa, a mattress or a box spring, for example. A separate truck collects them, apart from the garbage bags.
For an appliance, such as a stove, a washer or dryer, a fridge or freezer, or an air conditioner, book a pickup first, because appliances are collected by appointment only, with no limit on how many. Doors come off fridges, freezers and dryers, and washers are drained, before they go out. Book through the Region’s waste calendar, its app or 311.
Yard waste pickup in Ajax
Yard waste goes out at the curb in Ajax from April until early December, and the pickup takes brush, branches, sticks and twigs, garden waste, pumpkins and fallen fruit.
It goes out in paper yard waste bags or clearly labelled, returnable open-top containers, none heavier than 20 kg, and never in a green bin, a blue box or plastic. Bundle brush up to a metre long and 76 cm wide, with branches no more than 10 cm thick.
