Seven rows on the Region of Durham’s Regional Roads List name Ajax, and because no street appears twice, seven rows are seven streets: Bayly Street, Church Street, Kingston Road, Lake Ridge Road, Salem Road, Taunton Road and Westney Road. It is the smallest set of the four Durham municipalities in this service area. Every row carries a start and an end, so appearing on the list does not make a whole street the Region’s, and a street missing from it is one the Region does not list rather than one the Town necessarily owns.

The Region lists it as Regional Road 22, from Whites Road to Lake Ridge Road, and it is the street the rest of the Ajax list is measured against: Church Street, Lake Ridge Road and Salem Road all take Bayly Street as their starting limit. Four of the seven Ajax rows either are Bayly Street or begin at it. Between the limits the Region prints, it is the Region’s permit that applies rather than the Town’s.

No. The Town’s Road Occupancy and Road Closure By-law 48-2025 requires a permit holder not to permit storage bins, moving pods, material or any equipment to occupy the travelled portion of a highway or any portion of the grass boulevard abutting private property between November 1 and March 30th of each year. That is five months, and it sits in the enacted by-law rather than in conditions attached to a permit, so for that part of the year the driveway is the only place a container can stand.

The Town publishes two statements that do not sit easily together, and both are worth having. Its roads page invites anyone looking to store pods or bins on the road to apply for a road occupancy permit; the same page’s list of what is not permitted says the Town of Ajax does not permit bins, pods or construction material to be stored on the road. The by-law itself sets a five-month closed season and further conditions rather than a flat prohibition. Nothing published resolves the difference, so the safe plan is the driveway, with the specific block put to the Town.

Two places, and both are in the by-law. A permit holder may not place or store bins or moving pods on the travelled portion of a highway if the area is designated as a no stopping or no parking zone. And no material or storage bin may be placed on a highway where it creates a real or potential hazard for pedestrians or vehicles, which is a judgement the Town makes rather than the applicant. On a narrow older street those two can rule out the kerb in July as easily as in January.

The Town’s 2026 user fees and charges by-law sets a single rate for a road occupancy, quoted before tax. The Town’s own roads page prints a slightly lower figure, and where a fee by-law and a web page disagree the by-law is the document that sets the fee. Boulevard encroachment is priced separately: an application for a complex encroachment already built is charged at exactly double the rate for one proposed in advance.

A liability insurance certificate for a minimum of two million dollars, in a form the Town approves, naming the Town of Ajax as an additional insured, filed with the Town as part of the application. The by-law also requires a traffic management plan and detour route in accordance with Book 7 of the Ontario Traffic Manual where the Town asks for one, and makes the applicant responsible for maintaining access to every property on the street at all times.

Two years. The by-law makes the principal applicant responsible for the repairs of any nature to all disturbed areas for a period of two years from the date of completion of the work, and separately requires damaged areas of the highway to be repaired no later than five days after the work finishes. That is a long tail on a container that stood outside for a week, and it is the clause most likely to be missed when a homeowner applies in their own name.

It depends on the residential zone, and the Town publishes the maximum for each. The widest is 7.8 metres in R1-A, then 6.1 metres in R1-B, 5.6 metres in R1-C and R1-D, 5.2 metres in R1-E, R1-F and R2-A, and 3.0 metres in R2-B and R3. In the Country Residential zone there is no maximum width, but driveways and parking areas together may not take up more than 30 per cent of the front yard. Residential properties are limited to a single driveway access except in the Country Residential zone.

Yes, within limits, and that is unusual. Widening the apron across the Town-owned boulevard is what the by-law calls a simple encroachment, permitted as of right up to the maximum driveway width for the zone. The setbacks are specific: one metre from a municipal tree under twenty centimetres in diameter at breast height and two metres from a larger one, one metre from utility equipment or a traffic control sign, one metre from a transit stop with a concrete pad and three metres from one without, and three metres from a fire hydrant. Anything beyond that needs a complex encroachment agreement.

Yes, on Town roads. When weight restrictions are in effect, vehicle loads are restricted to a maximum of five tonnes per axle in accordance with the Town of Ajax Traffic By-law. The Town gives the season it describes as beginning on 1 March and ending on 30 April, publishes a list of exempt roads, and notes that restrictions on Regional roads are set by the Region and may change independently. On a heavy load in early spring it is a date worth raising when the job is booked.

To one of the Region of Durham’s waste management facilities, all of which are a drive out of the town — the Region lists them by address and none of them is in Ajax. They open Tuesday to Saturday and take card or debit only, no cash. Your vehicle crosses a scale on the way in and again on the way out, and the difference is what you are charged for. A flat rate covers loads up to 40 kilograms, with a step rate for every eight kilograms above that and a per-tonne rate that works out to the same thing.
