What does a bin rental price actually buy?
Three things. The first is the truck, both ways: bringing the bin and taking it away. The second is the days the bin sits at your place. Those two cost the same however heavy the load turns out to be. The third is dumping the load, which the dump charges by the tonne.
With household and renovation waste, the price already includes some weight, more in a bigger bin. Any weight past what is included is charged by the tonne, from the weigh slip the dump prints. Clean concrete and clean soil, with nothing else in them, have no weight charge at all. Their price is one delivery and one pickup of a 14 yard bin, with the dumping included. Every bin has a fill line marked on it, and on clean concrete and clean soil that line is the limit instead of a scale.
The boards laid under the bin on a driveway come with every delivery, at no extra cost.
Tax goes on top of all of it: HST in Ontario is 13 per cent. Your online price shows it on its own line and includes it in the total.
| What goes in the bin | What the price includes | The main things that can still change it |
|---|---|---|
| Household and renovation waste | Bringing the bin, taking it away, 7 days, and 2 to 4 tonnes of weight, by bin size | Weight past what is included, filling above the fill line, and extra days |
| Clean concrete | One delivery and one pickup of a 14 yard bin, with no weight charge | Filling above the fill line and extra days. If anything else is mixed in, the bin is not taken away |
| Clean soil | One delivery and one pickup of a 14 yard bin, with no weight charge | Filling above the fill line and extra days. If anything else is mixed in, the bin is not taken away |
Put a weight on the load before you book
With household and renovation waste, weight is what can surprise you: each tonne over what is included costs extra. Enter the length, width and height of your pile, and our free weight calculator estimates its weight in tonnes, using numbers that government agencies publish. Then you know before you book, while you can still keep the heavy things out.
What changes the price, and what doesn’t
The price is set before the bin comes, but the load is not, so two households can rent the same bin and pay different amounts. What makes the difference is what went in and how long the bin stayed.
Weight is the big one, and it only counts for household and renovation waste. Cardboard, furniture and wood scraps fill a bin long before they reach the weight in the price. Tile, plaster and brick can go past it while the bin still looks half empty. Brick is very heavy for its size, so it uses up the included weight fast. What can go in a bin shows, item by item, what can go in and what cannot.
Days are the second. The first 7 days are included, and each day past that is charged. Your online price counts those days in when you give your dates, so you see them before you book, not after.
The third is the fill line marked on every bin. Filling above it costs extra, whatever is in the bin.
Two more can apply on the day itself: a trip where the truck cannot set the bin down, and keeping the driver waiting longer than usual.
Distance never moves the price. An address at the far edge of our area pays the same as one a few streets from our yard. A longer drive changes the truck’s day, not your price.
Fuel is already part of the price, so no fuel surcharge is added to your bill. There is no environmental fee or admin fee either.
| Can change your price | Does not change it |
|---|---|
| Weight past what is included, on household and renovation waste | How far your address is from the yard, anywhere we deliver |
| Extra days | Fuel — it is part of the price |
| Filling above the fill line, on any bin | The charge for each extra tonne — it is the same for every bin size |
| Anything else in a clean concrete or clean soil bin — the bin is not taken away, and there is a charge if it is already loaded | The boards laid under the bin on a driveway |

What does a construction dumpster rental cost?
Bin rentals from $718, before HST. That buys a 14 yard bin of household and renovation waste. Bigger renovations and builds take the 30 or the 40 yard, and those are priced online for your own dates.
On a building job, budget for the weight each size includes: 2 tonnes in the 14 yard, 3 tonnes in the 30 yard and 4 tonnes in the 40 yard. Each tonne over it is added to the bill.
On a long job, a full household and renovation waste bin can be swapped for an empty one of equal size, and the empty one starts out with its own included weight. The 7 included days start over with it too. That household-waste swap counts as one trip, not a new rental. Clean concrete and clean soil are billed another way: each extra bin of either is a whole new rental.
Bin rental for contractors covers swaps and repeat work, and Construction bin rental helps match the bin to each stage of a build.
Can I rent a 10 or 20 yard dumpster?
Big Bin does not rent a 10 yard or a 20 yard dumpster. The smallest bin Big Bin rents is the 14 yard, the one its lowest price buys. That price stays the same however little goes in. It suits jobs like these: gutting a bathroom or kitchen, a garage clear-out, one room taken down to the wall frame.
For anything bigger, the Bin size guide sets all the sizes side by side.
What can a bin job cost apart from the rental?
One bill can come from someone other than Big Bin: a permit. You need one only when the bin sits past your property line, on the road, the sidewalk, a public lane or the boulevard. The permit is written permission from whoever owns that land. That is usually your city or town, and on some main roads it is the Region, such as Peel, Halton or Durham. Right now, you apply for the permit yourself; Big Bin does not apply for it.
On your own land, none of this applies. The end of a driveway nearest the street can belong to the city, so keep the bin on your side of the property line.
| Where | Who charges | What the city or town charges |
|---|---|---|
| On your own land, inside the property line | Nobody | No permit is needed |
| Toronto | City of Toronto | $73.89 + HST source [1] a day for a disposal bin — the rate a house renovation pays |
| Burlington | City of Burlington | $71.54 source [2] per permit, plus a $500 source [2] damage deposit |
| Oakville | Town of Oakville | $334.00 source [3] per application, plus $32.00 source [3] a day |
| Whitby | Town of Whitby | $160.98 source [4] per permit, plus $70.86 source [4] a day if the bin takes a lane of a side street, or the boulevard or sidewalk. On a busier road (Whitby calls these collector or arterial roads), $619.16 source [4] per permit, plus $334.16 source [4] a day for each lane the bin takes, and more at rush hour |
| Oshawa | City of Oshawa | $87.50 source [5] plus tax, to use a road or boulevard without digging |
| Pickering | City of Pickering | $175.00 source [6] for each street named on the application |
| Ajax | Town of Ajax | $210.90 source [7] for each road occupancy permit |
When is it cheaper to take the load to the dump yourself?
When there is only one carload. The public drop-offs in Peel, Halton, Durham and Toronto all charge by weight, with a small charge for a light load. So a trunk full of scraps or one broken chair costs little at the drop-off, compared with renting a bin. What it costs you instead is a vehicle that can carry it, and your afternoon.
The math changes as the trips add up. Each trip is weighed and charged on its own, and your vehicle limits how much fits in one. Heavy material is its own problem. The Region of Durham charges a load of fill, like soil or rubble, at $375 per 1,000 kilograms source [10], more than twice its rate for general waste. And Toronto’s drop-off sites take no concrete, brick or soil at all.
There is a third answer between the carload and the bin: paying people to carry it out, which is the better choice for one heavy item on an upper floor. For a bin and a crew side by side, read Bin rental or junk removal?
| Public drop-off | A light load | Above that |
|---|---|---|
| Region of Peel Community Recycling Centres | $7 source [8] minimum for a load you pay for | 14.5 cents per kg source [8] |
| Halton Waste Management Site | $10/load source [9] at or under 150 kg | $221/tonne source [9] on the whole load |
| Region of Durham waste management facilities | $7 source [10] up to 40 kg | $175 per 1,000 kilograms source [10] |
| City of Toronto Drop-Off Depots | $19 source [11] for the first 100 kg | $189.86 source [11] per tonne |
How to keep your bin rental cheap
Pick the size for the space the load takes. Each tonne past the weight included costs the same in every bin size, so a bigger bin never makes a heavy load cheaper. Work out what the load weighs before you book, so the extra tonnes are no surprise.
Keep a clean concrete or clean soil bin clean. Brick is not clean concrete. If other waste ends up in that bin, the truck leaves it where it is, and a charge applies if it is already full.
Every rental includes 7 days whether the job needs all of them or not, so a shorter booking saves nothing. Plan the work so the bin is ready to go by day 7.
Last, look for room on your own land. In Toronto, for example, the City’s permit for a bin is needed only past your property line, and it is charged by the day. A spot inside that line keeps the permit off the job. Measure from the property line, not the curb, since the stretch of driveway by the street can be City land.
Bin rental cost: common questions
What is the cheapest dumpster you can rent?
Bin rentals from $718, before HST, for a 14 yard bin of household and renovation waste, the smallest bin Big Bin rents. For any one load that fits in it, it costs less than a 30 yard, however heavy the load. For a single carload, a city or regional drop-off costs less than any bin.
How much do bins cost per month?
Bin rentals from $718, before HST. A bin is priced for the job, not by the month. The first 7 days are included and each day after that is charged, so a month costs the rental plus the days past the first week. Your online price counts them in when you give your dates. On a long job, a full bin of household and renovation waste can be swapped for an empty one, which comes with its own weight included. That household-waste swap is charged as one trip for that size of bin, not as a new rental. With clean concrete or clean soil, every further bin is a full price again.
Is a city permit included in the price of a bin rental?
A Big Bin price does not include a permit. You need one only when the bin sits past your property line: on the road, the sidewalk, the boulevard or a public lane. You pay that fee to the city, town or Region that owns the road. It is not part of the bin rental. Right now, you apply for the permit yourself; Big Bin does not apply for it. Some places charge by the day, some for each application and some for each street, and a bin inside your property line needs no permit at all.
What is the cheapest way to get rid of household waste?
For a small amount, use your city or region. Peel, Toronto, Halton and Durham each pick up furniture and mattresses at the curb, though how you book and the limits are different in each, and their public drop-offs charge by weight. A rented bin makes sense once the job is more than a few carloads, or too heavy for your vehicle to carry.
Do you pay the dump fee separately from the bin rental?
No. The dump fee is part of a Big Bin price. For household and renovation waste, the price pays to dump the weight it includes; if the load weighs more, each extra tonne is added from the dump’s weigh slip. For clean concrete and clean soil, dumping is part of the flat price, with no weight charge. You get one bill, from Big Bin.
