Both words are right, and they name the same object. Neither is a mistake, and nobody will correct you on the phone.

“Dumpster” is the everyday North American word. It came from a brand name — the Dempster Dumpster — and became the general term the way a photocopier became a Xerox. In the United States it is what almost everybody says.

The Ontario waste industry says “bin”. That is the word on the truck, on the invoice and in the conversation, and it is the word Big Bin uses. So a search for one word tends to return companies using the other, and a local operator can be missing from the results entirely.

The confusion is not really between the two words, though. In American usage “dumpster” often means the small lidded container behind a building. In Ontario that is a separate product on a separate kind of contract, so somebody asking for one here may picture a thing they cannot buy.

There is a second-order effect worth knowing about. Because the industry writes “bin” and the public searches “dumpster”, the results you get for one word are thin on companies who use the other. A local operator can be entirely absent from a search you would expect to find them in, purely because of the noun on their website.
