What does a bin cost in Ontario, and what changes the price?

A bin of mixed renovation waste covers delivery, collection, 7 days on site and an amount of weight that rises with the bin — 2 tonnes in the 14, 3 tonnes in the 30 and 4 tonnes in the 40. Weight above that is billed per tonne against the disposal facility's scale ticket. Clean concrete and soil or fill go in a 14 yard bin and carry no weight charge at all — one delivery, one collection, and a fill line on the bin instead of a tonnage. The material decides more than the size does, because disposal is billed by the tonne and the same steel box can differ fivefold in weight. What a price covers

Every price covers the delivery, the collection, 7 days on site and the disposal. Mixed waste also includes a tonnage at the scale; clean concrete and clean fill carry no weight charge at all and are limited by a fill line on the bin instead.

Your own figure depends on the bin, the material and how long you keep it — so it comes from the quote rather than from a card. Four questions, the days you want the bin, and your name and number: the price is then on the screen with HST already in it.

What can change the number

Mixed waste carries a weight allowance. Clean concrete and clean fill carry none at all — a fill line instead. So what can move your number depends on which one you are throwing out. Work out what your load weighs before you pick a size.

Weight above the included tonnage, on mixed waste

A mixed-waste bin includes 2 tonnes in the 14 yard, and more in the larger sizes. Above that it is billed per tonne against the scale ticket from the disposal facility. This is the charge that surprises people, and it is why the weight estimator exists. It does not apply to clean concrete or clean fill, which carry no weight charge at all.

A load above the fill line, on any bin

Every bin carries a painted fill line. On clean concrete and clean fill it is the only thing that can move the number, because there is no weight charge. A load above the line adds a flat charge, fuel included, whatever is in the bin.

The extra-service fees

Days beyond the 7 included, a delivery the truck could not complete, waiting time, moving a bin after it is set down. Every one of them is named in the fee table below, and the quote prices your own dates so the extra days are already in your figure.

Contaminating a clean loadA bin of clean concrete goes to a recycler cheaply. How much does a bin cost in Ontario?

Why do bin rental companies advertise a price and then charge more?

Because the advertised price usually includes a weight allowance. A company quotes before it knows what you will put in the bin, so it publishes a low base price, includes a tonnage in it, and bills a per-tonne overage for anything above that. The advertised number is only the real number if the load stays under the allowance.

Is HST included in a bin rental price?

The quote flow shows HST inside the total, so the figure on your screen is the figure you pay. The price card is before HST and says so on every row, and the rate is 13 per cent in Ontario.
