How dumpster bin rental in Hamilton works
Three steps. You tell us what is going in and where the bin can stand. A truck sets the empty bin on that spot, and later a truck takes it away full. Nobody usually has to be at the house for either visit. We need the exact spot, and room for the truck to get to it.
Our yard is in Mississauga, and the trucks that serve Hamilton also go to Burlington, Milton, Caledon, Oakville and Toronto.
01
Tell us about the job
Call or email with what you are clearing, where the bin can stand, and when you need it.
02
The bin arrives
A truck sets the bin down where you asked. Nothing is emptied at your place: you or your crew fill it when it suits you.
03
It leaves full
The truck takes the whole bin away, and the load is weighed at the dump.
How much does disposal bin rental in Hamilton cost?
Bin rentals from $718, before HST, for a 14 yard bin of household and renovation waste. A Hamilton address adds nothing to the price.
On the rental, the bin size and what goes in set the price. With household and renovation waste, the price includes some weight: 2 tonnes for a 14 yard bin, 3 tonnes for a 30 yard and 4 tonnes for a 40 yard. The full bin is weighed at the dump, and each tonne over what the price includes is added. The fill line marked on each bin shows how high to load it. Going over it costs extra, and so does keeping a bin past 7 days.
If the driver has no room to set the bin down on the day, that is a failed delivery. Bin rental prices lists it with the other extra charges.

How to keep a Hamilton bin rental cheap
Pick the smallest bin the job fits in, since a second bin is a second charge, and a heavy load costs no less in a bigger bin. Keep a concrete or soil load clean, so it stays at its one flat price. And plan the days: only the days past the 7 included cost extra.
Can a bin go on your driveway in Hamilton?
Yes, on your own land. Inside your property line, a bin does not need the City’s street permit, though the front part of a driveway, next to the street, can be City land. Past that line, on the boulevard, the sidewalk or the road, it does. In Hamilton, the boulevard includes a part of the yard between the property line and the edge of the street, and it is a different size at every home. The boulevard is City land, even where it looks like your front lawn. So measure from your property line, not from the curb.
The permit is the City’s Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Occupancy Permit. The City’s 2026 fee by-law sets a fee for sidewalk and boulevard occupancy.
The City also asks anyone building or renovating a Hamilton house to place a dumpster where it bothers the neighbours least, away from their homes and not blocking their driveways. If the bin cannot stand on your own land, call us before you book.
| The question | What the City of Hamilton says |
|---|---|
| A local street, an alley, or part of a sidewalk | $63.55 source [2] for every 14 days |
| A main road lane signed No Parking Anytime or No Stopping Anytime | $63.55 source [2] for each lane, each day |
| A sidewalk closed to people walking | $137.60 source [2] for every 14 days, with signs put up and paid for by the permit holder |
| Tax | HST not included, and collected where it applies |
| Notice | At least 5 days |

Where is the dump in Hamilton, and when is it open?
For waste disposal in Hamilton, residents can use the City’s three Community Recycling Centres: 27 Olympic Drive in Dundas, 460 Kenora Avenue, and 37 Kilbride Road on Hamilton Mountain. All three are open Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 6 pm, and closed on Sundays and holidays.
The Glanbrook Landfill is the City of Hamilton’s only operating landfill site.
At the centres, appliances, electronics, yard waste, clean 2x4s and 2x2s, and up to ten car tires a day are taken. The centres take cash, debit, Mastercard and Visa, and the City says trailers are not allowed at any of them.
The centres do not take everything. The City’s waste by-law lists what the centres take, and turns away anything not on that list.
| What you have | Where it goes | On what terms |
|---|---|---|
| Garbage, under 100 kg | A City drop-off centre | $11.50 source [5], HST not included |
| Garbage, over 100 kg | A City drop-off centre | $14 source [5] for each 100 kg, HST not included |
| Asphalt shingles | A City drop-off centre | Charged the same as garbage |
| Recycling, and scrap metal sorted on its own | A City drop-off centre | Free |
| Soil, rocks, sod, stone, concrete or brick | No City drop-off centre | Not taken |
| Soil with nothing else in it, by the bin | A 14 yard bin from Big Bin | One flat price, with no weight charge |
Garbage and junk removal in Hamilton
In Hamilton, a rented bin takes the junk from a clear-out and the waste from a renovation together: furniture, mattresses, household contents, scrap metal, drywall, cabinets, tile and branches. If something is unusual, call 416-458-4324 before the bin arrives. To choose between a bin and junk removal, see Bin rental or junk removal?
At the curb, the City lets one bag or can of garbage go out each week, and each extra bag needs a trash tag. No bag can weigh over 23 kg. Every household gets 12 trash tags in the mail each year and can order 14 more, and the City charges nothing for ordering them. The tags work at the curb only, not at a drop-off centre.
Where to take hazardous waste in Hamilton
Take household hazardous waste in Hamilton to one of the City’s three Community Recycling Centres, where there is no charge to drop it off. It is not picked up at the curb, and you must live in Hamilton to drop it off: businesses may not.
Each visit can bring up to 40 kg of hazardous waste, or 40 litres of liquid, plus eight fluorescent tubes and one thermostat with mercury in it. Paint, motor oil, solvents, car batteries and large, non-refillable barbecue propane cylinders are all on the City’s list. Containers must still have some of the waste in them: empty containers are not accepted.
Does Hamilton pick up bulk garbage?
Yes, every week. The City of Hamilton picks up furniture and other bulk items that are too big for a garbage bag or can. That includes carpet rolled and tied, and toilets with the tank taken off. Mattresses and box springs are picked up only if they are wrapped and sealed in plastic. Each booking takes up to four items, none heavier than 90 kg or longer than 1.2 m, and a two-person crew has to be able to lift each one. The service is for homes of five units or fewer that put their waste out at the curb.
Book it online, and the pickup comes on your collection day two weeks later, or call the City at least a week ahead. Put the items out by 7 am on the day. Pressure-treated wood and railway ties are not collected, and a bathtub has to be broken into pieces of 23 kg or less. Metal is not bulk garbage: appliances and scrap metal go to a Community Recycling Centre instead.
Renovation waste is not part of it. The City says it will not collect construction and renovation waste from a property, so it cannot go out at the curb. A drop-off centre may take some of it, so ask the City before you drive a load there. For a renovation, a rented bin takes it instead: What can go in a bin lists what goes in one, item by item.
Can you get rid of concrete for free in Hamilton?
Not from the City of Hamilton. Its garbage pickup does not take bricks, concrete or drywall, and concrete is not on the list of what its drop-off centres take. A bin is one way to get rid of broken concrete from a Hamilton patio, slab or concrete driveway.
A bin from Big Bin is not free either. For concrete disposal in Hamilton, our 14 yard bin takes broken concrete with nothing else in it, at one flat price and with no weight charge.
How heavy is your pile, before you pick a bin?
Plaster, tile and old brick weigh a lot for their size. Type in how long, wide and tall your pile is, and our free weight tool estimates its weight in tonnes. Then you know what the extra weight will add before you book.
Which disposal bin size suits a Hamilton job?
All three of our bins come to Hamilton: 14, 30 or 40 yard. Two questions pick the size: what is going in, and how much of it there is.
What is going in comes first. Concrete and soil each go in a 14 yard bin of their own, never together, and either one is priced flat, with no charge for weight. Keep them clean too: if anything else is in with them, the bin is not taken away. If you have filled the bin by the time that is found, a charge applies as well. Asphalt is not a material Big Bin takes, in any bin size. Big Bin does not take contaminated soil. To see why concrete gets its own bin, read Concrete disposal.
How much comes second. A garage clear-out or a basement of old furniture fills a bin by space, not by weight. If a bin fills up before the job is done, a second bin costs extra, so leave some room when you choose. To compare the three bins side by side, see the Bin size guide.
The 40 yard bin, our largest dumpster
The 40 yard is the largest dumpster we rent in Hamilton, with the most room and the most weight included. It takes up no more ground than the 30 yard: the extra room is in its height. For its measurements, the weight that comes with it and the jobs it suits, see 40 yard bin rental.
How big is each roll-off bin?
| Bin | Measurements | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 14 yard | 4'1" high × 11'6" long × 7'6" wide | Gutting a bathroom or kitchen, a garage clear-out, one room taken down to the wall frame. |
| 30 yard | 5'4" high × 20' long × 7'6" wide | A full renovation, taking off a roof, clearing out a house, a mid-size demolition. |
| 40 yard | 7' high × 20' long × 7'6" wide | A whole-house renovation, fitting out a store or office, a long building job. |
Before a bin comes to your Hamilton address, look at the way in as well as the spot. The truck needs about 25 feet of headroom to lift its bed, 10 feet of width and 65 feet of straight, clear space to back in. These are rough numbers, so call and describe the spot if yours is tighter.

Construction bin rental in Hamilton
On a Hamilton construction site, a bin full of household and renovation waste can be swapped for an empty bin of that size. With household waste, the empty bin comes with the same weight included as the first one, and its own 7 days on site, counted from the swap. Each household-waste swap is billed as one trip for a bin that size, never as another rental. There is no swap rate for clean concrete or clean soil, so every bin of either after the first costs the full price again.
Bin rental for contractors sets out how swaps work on a long job. Construction bin rental helps when the waste changes as the build goes on. Running several Hamilton jobs, or managing a building? See Commercial bin and dumpster rental.
Renting a bin in Hamilton: common questions
Do I need a permit for a bin in Hamilton?
Not if it stands on your own land, inside the property line. Anywhere past that — the boulevard, the sidewalk or the road — it needs the City of Hamilton’s Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Occupancy Permit. The boulevard at the front of a Hamilton yard is City land, even where it looks like lawn. So measure from your property line, not from the curb. If the bin cannot stand on your own land, call Big Bin before you book.
Where is the dump in Hamilton?
At the City’s three Community Recycling Centres: 27 Olympic Drive in Dundas, 460 Kenora Avenue, and 37 Kilbride Road on Hamilton Mountain. All three are open Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 6 pm, and closed on Sundays and holidays. A load of garbage under 100 kilograms costs $11.50 source [5], and a heavier load is charged $14 source [5] for every 100 kilograms it weighs. Trailers are not allowed at any of them, and they do not take soil, rocks or stone.
How much does disposal bin rental cost in Hamilton?
Bin rentals from $718, before HST, for a 14 yard bin of household and renovation waste. That price includes delivery, pickup and 7 days. Weight over what a bin includes adds to it, and so do a load above the fill line and a bin kept longer. The price is the same anywhere in Hamilton. Get your own price online.
What can go in a bin in Hamilton?
Furniture, mattresses, household contents, wood, drywall, cabinets, tile, carpet, roofing shingles, scrap metal, fencing and branches can go in a bin of household and renovation waste. Asphalt is not a material Big Bin takes, in any bin size. Big Bin does not take contaminated soil. Paint, propane tanks, batteries and tires stay out of the bin and go to a drop-off of their own. In Hamilton, the City’s Community Recycling Centres take household hazardous waste free, from Hamilton residents. If something is unusual, call 416-458-4324 before the bin arrives. For the rest, item by item, see What can go in a bin.
Do you rent industrial bins in Hamilton?
Yes. Big Bin rents the same 14, 30 and 40 yard roll-off bins to businesses and buildings in Hamilton, one bin or one job at a time. See Commercial bin and dumpster rental.
Can yard waste go in a bin in Hamilton?
A bin of household and renovation waste takes fencing, decking, sod, branches and brick from a landscaping job. Brick goes in with other household and renovation waste, but it is heavy for its size: the price includes 2 to 4 tonnes of weight, by bin size, and each tonne over that costs extra. Brick uses up that weight fast. The City of Hamilton’s own yard waste pickup comes on your collection day every week in season, with no limit on how much you put out.
Can I rent a bin for clean fill or concrete in Hamilton?
Yes. Clean soil, or clean concrete, each goes in a 14 yard bin of its own, with nothing else in it. In Hamilton, digging out, adding or piling up fill or topsoil needs the City’s Site Alteration Permit. Lawn and garden work can be exempt when no more than 15 centimetres of fill goes down anywhere, the drainage to neighbouring properties does not change, and no ditch or channel that carries water away is changed or blocked, but the City has to confirm that in writing first, at no fee. The City’s drop-off centres take no soil.
Do you offer dumpster rental in Stoney Creek?
Yes, Big Bin delivers to Stoney Creek. A bin on a Stoney Creek street needs the same City permit as one elsewhere in Hamilton. The price is the same as anywhere else we deliver.
Do you deliver to Ancaster, Dundas and Waterdown?
Yes. Big Bin delivers in Hamilton, including Ancaster, Dundas, Waterdown and Stoney Creek, at the same price as anywhere else we deliver. A bin on the street in any of them needs the City of Hamilton’s lane and sidewalk permit. Call us before you book a street spot.
