How residential bin rental in Richmond Hill works
Three steps. You tell us what is going in and where the bin can stand. A truck sets the empty bin on that spot, and later a truck takes it away full. Nobody usually has to be at the house for either visit. We need the exact spot, and room for the truck to get to it.
Our yard is in Mississauga, and the trucks that serve Richmond Hill also go to Markham, Vaughan, Toronto, Aurora and Newmarket.
01
Tell us about the job
Call or email with what you are clearing, where the bin can stand, and when you need it.
02
The bin arrives
A truck sets the bin down where you asked. Nothing is emptied at your place: you or your crew fill it when it suits you.
03
It leaves full
The truck takes the whole bin away, and the load is weighed at the dump.
How much does garbage bin rental in Richmond Hill cost?
Bin rentals from $718, before HST, for a 14 yard bin of household and renovation waste. A Richmond Hill address adds nothing to the price.
On the rental, the bin size and what goes in set the price. With household and renovation waste, the price includes some weight: 2 tonnes for a 14 yard bin, 3 tonnes for a 30 yard and 4 tonnes for a 40 yard. The full bin is weighed at the dump, and each tonne over what the price includes is added. The fill line marked on each bin shows how high to load it. Going over it costs extra, and so does keeping a bin past 7 days.
If the driver has no room to set the bin down on the day, that is a failed delivery. Bin rental prices lists it with the other extra charges.

Can a bin go on your driveway in Richmond Hill?
Yes, on your own land. In Richmond Hill, the City’s road runs from property line to property line, so where your driveway meets the street can be City land.
For a spot on a City street, ask the City first. Its road occupancy permit covers work on the road, such as closing a lane, running a crane or crossing the boulevard to reach a building site, and its page names no bin.
Some of Richmond Hill’s main roads are run by York Region, and each one has a numbered Regional road sign; for a bin on a road like that, ask the Region.

Where is the dump in Richmond Hill?
Richmond Hill’s public drop-off is York Region’s Elgin Mills Community Environmental Centre, at 1124 Elgin Mills Road East. Its entrance has moved to John McCrae Street, just west of the City’s Operations Centre.
The centre takes household garbage, concrete, drywall and untreated wood, each for a fee, and nothing from a vehicle larger than a 16-foot cube truck. Each vehicle is weighed for the charge, and recyclables in a load with garbage are charged along with it. York asks for proof of residency, and takes cash, debit, American Express, Mastercard and Visa.
Sort a renovation load before the trip. Painted drywall, or drywall with nails in it, must be kept apart from clean drywall, and concrete has to be solid and free of rebar, separate from any asphalt or brick.
Household hazardous waste, electronics and scrap metal go in at no charge for residents, with hazardous waste limited to 60 litres a day. If you are not sure an item can go in a rented bin, look it up in What can go in a bin.
| What you have | Where it goes | On what terms |
|---|---|---|
| A load to drop off | Elgin Mills | Wednesday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; closed Monday, Tuesday and holidays |
| Household garbage or renovation waste | Elgin Mills | $11 source [7] up to 100 kg, then $180 source [7] a tonne |
| A fridge or freezer without a CFC removal sticker | Elgin Mills | $20 source [7] each |
| Soil, sod or clean fill | Not Elgin Mills | Not accepted |
| Soil with nothing else in it, by the bin | A 14 yard bin from Big Bin | One flat price, with no weight charge |
Garbage and junk removal in Richmond Hill
In Richmond Hill, a rented bin takes the junk from a clear-out and the waste from a renovation together: furniture, mattresses, household contents, scrap metal, drywall, cabinets, tile and branches. If something is unusual, call 416-458-4324 before the bin arrives. To choose between a bin and junk removal, see Bin rental or junk removal?
Right now, the City of Richmond Hill collects garbage every other week, three items each garbage day. An item is a bag, a can of up to 125 litres, a bundle of up to 1.2 metres or one large item, and a bag or can must weigh under 18 kg. Anything past three needs a garbage tag, and in 2026 a set of five tags is $12.75 source [9].
Construction and renovation waste is not picked up at the curb.
Furniture, mattress and appliance removal in Richmond Hill
Right now, Richmond Hill picks up furniture and mattresses with the garbage, every other week: a sofa, chair, mattress or toilet counts as one of the three garbage items. A large item can weigh 68 kg and run 1.83 m long at most; anything bigger goes to a waste depot. A two-piece toilet goes out in two pieces, tank and bowl.
In 2026, the City picks up large appliances and metal items for free once a month, by appointment. The pickup covers fridges, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers and air conditioners, and metal items such as bed frames, bicycles and metal exercise equipment. Book online or through Access Richmond Hill, and take the doors off appliances first. The pickup does not take electronics, water softeners or pool filters.
Yard waste pickup in Richmond Hill
In 2026, the City of Richmond Hill picks up yard waste every other week on garbage day from mid-April to October 9, and every week from October 13 to December 11. It takes leaves, pine cones, fallen fruit, tree and shrub clippings, weeds, flowers and pumpkins, but not soil, sod or grass clippings.
Use a large Kraft paper bag, or a rigid open-top container of up to 125 litres with a yellow yard waste sticker; plastic bags are not picked up. The City gives out the stickers at Access Richmond Hill and its Operations Centre. Bundle branches with twine, up to 1.2 metres long, with each branch up to 10 cm across, and keep each bag, container or bundle under 18 kg.
Elgin Mills takes no yard waste, but York’s McCleary Court centre, at 130 McCleary Court, takes it for a fee, for a load that misses the pickup.
Will a Richmond Hill load weigh more than the bin includes?
Shingles, tile and plaster weigh more than most people guess. Enter the length, width and height of what you are throwing out, and our free weight calculator gives an estimate in tonnes, so you see before you book whether your load stays inside the weight your bin includes.
Which disposal bin size suits a Richmond Hill job?
All three of our bins come to Richmond Hill: 14, 30 or 40 yard. Two questions pick the size: what is going in, and how much of it there is.
What is going in comes first. Concrete and soil each go in a 14 yard bin of their own, never together, and either one is priced flat, with no charge for weight. Keep them clean too: if anything else is in with them, the bin is not taken away. If you have filled the bin by the time that is found, a charge applies as well. Asphalt is not a material Big Bin takes, in any bin size. Big Bin does not take contaminated soil. To see why concrete gets its own bin, read Concrete disposal.
How much comes second. A garage clear-out or a basement of old furniture fills a bin by space, not by weight. If a bin fills up before the job is done, a second bin costs extra, so leave some room when you choose. To compare the three bins side by side, see the Bin size guide.
How big is each bin?
| Bin | Measurements | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 14 yard | 4'1" high × 11'6" long × 7'6" wide | Gutting a bathroom or kitchen, a garage clear-out, one room taken down to the wall frame. |
| 30 yard | 5'4" high × 20' long × 7'6" wide | A full renovation, taking off a roof, clearing out a house, a mid-size demolition. |
| 40 yard | 7' high × 20' long × 7'6" wide | A whole-house renovation, fitting out a store or office, a long building job. |
Before a bin comes to your Richmond Hill address, look at the way in as well as the spot. The truck needs about 25 feet of headroom to lift its bed, 10 feet of width and 65 feet of straight, clear space to back in. These are rough numbers, so call and describe the spot if yours is tighter.

Construction bin rental in Richmond Hill
On a Richmond Hill construction site, a bin full of household and renovation waste can be swapped for an empty bin of that size. With household waste, the empty bin comes with the same weight included as the first one, and its own 7 days on site, counted from the swap. Each household-waste swap is billed as one trip for a bin that size, never as another rental. There is no swap rate for clean concrete or clean soil, so every bin of either after the first costs the full price again.
For a site bin on a Richmond Hill street, ask the City before you book.
Bin rental for contractors sets out how swaps work on a long job. Construction bin rental helps when the waste changes as the build goes on. Running several Richmond Hill jobs, or managing a building? See Commercial bin and dumpster rental.
Bin rental in Richmond Hill: common questions
Do I need a permit for a bin in Richmond Hill?
Not on your own land, though the end of a driveway nearest the street can be City land. For a spot on a City street, ask the City first: its road occupancy permit is for work on the road, and its page names no bin. On a York Region road, ask the Region.
Where is the dump in Richmond Hill?
It is York Region’s Elgin Mills Community Environmental Centre, at 1124 Elgin Mills Road East, and its entrance is now on John McCrae Street. The centre is open Wednesday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and closed on holidays. Up to 100 kg of garbage costs $11 source [7]; a heavier load is $180 source [7] a tonne. York asks for proof of residency, and no vehicle larger than a 16-foot cube truck can drop off.
How much does dumpster bin rental cost in Richmond Hill?
Bin rentals from $718, before HST, for a 14 yard bin of household and renovation waste. That price includes delivery, pickup and 7 days. Weight over what a bin includes adds to it, and so do a load above the fill line and a bin kept longer. The price is the same anywhere in Richmond Hill. Get your own price online.
What can go in a bin in Richmond Hill?
Furniture, mattresses, household contents, wood, drywall, cabinets, tile, carpet, roofing shingles, scrap metal, fencing and branches can go in a bin of household and renovation waste. Asphalt is not a material Big Bin takes, in any bin size. Big Bin does not take contaminated soil. Paint, propane tanks, batteries and tires stay out of the bin and go to a drop-off of their own. In Richmond Hill, York Region’s Elgin Mills centre takes household hazardous waste from residents at no charge. If something is unusual, call 416-458-4324 before the bin arrives. For the rest, item by item, see What can go in a bin.
Do you rent commercial bins in Richmond Hill?
Yes. Big Bin rents the same 14, 30 and 40 yard roll-off bins to businesses and buildings in Richmond Hill, one bin or one job at a time. See Commercial bin and dumpster rental.
Can yard waste go in a bin in Richmond Hill?
A bin of household and renovation waste takes fencing, decking, sod, branches and brick from a landscaping job. Brick goes in with other household and renovation waste, but it is heavy for its size: the price includes 2 to 4 tonnes of weight, by bin size, and each tonne over that costs extra. Brick uses up that weight fast.
Can I rent a bin for clean fill or concrete in Richmond Hill?
Yes. Clean soil, or clean concrete, each goes in a 14 yard bin of its own, with nothing else in it. In Richmond Hill, placing or dumping fill, removing topsoil or changing the grade of land needs a site alteration permit, and right now the City’s permit to excavate, fill or landscape is $673.06 source [15].
