Three steps. You tell us what is going in and where the bin can stand. A truck sets the empty bin on that spot, and later a truck takes it away full. Nobody usually has to be at the house for either visit. We need the exact spot, and room for the truck to get to it.

Yes, on your own land. The Town asks for no permit for a bin standing inside the property line. The Town of Whitby owns the small piece of property known as the boulevard at the end of your driveway, so the end of a drive by the street can be Town land.

On a Town road, the Town issues a Road Occupancy Permit for any work that causes traffic disruptions, such as blocking lanes with materials, or equipment, and allows up to five business days to process an application. Its permit page does not mention bins, so ask the Town before you plan a spot on a Town road.

The Town’s permit does not cover the Region of Durham’s roads. The Region lists the roads it owns in Whitby and across Durham; for one of them, ask the Region.

In Whitby, a rented bin takes the junk from a clear-out and the waste from a renovation together: furniture, mattresses, household contents, scrap metal, drywall, cabinets, tile and branches. The Town of Whitby collects garbage every other week on your regular collection day. Set it out by 7 a.m. in standard garbage bags, since the Town does not empty cans, and keep each bag under 20 kg.

The limit is four bags. Right now, each bag past four needs a pre-purchased tag on its neck, and tags are sold in sets of five, each costing $2.75 ^{source [6]}. Renovation material such as cabinetry, lumber, drywall, doors, carpet or underlay is not collected.

The Town collects leaves and yard waste every other week from the beginning of April through to the end of November, on your regular garbage day. Use Kraft paper bags or approved reusable open-top containers, and keep each one under 20 kg.

From April to September, up to 16 bags, containers or bundles can go out for a collection; October and November have no limit. Tie brush and branches in bundles no longer than 1 m, no wider than 76 cm and no thicker than 10 cm. Grass clippings, sod, soil and rocks are not picked up.

All three of our bins come to Whitby: 14, 30 or 40 yard. Two questions pick the size: what is going in, and how much of it there is.

What is going in comes first. Concrete and soil each go in a 14 yard bin of their own, never together, and either one is priced flat, with no charge for weight. Keep them clean too: if anything else is in with them, the bin is not taken away. If you have filled the bin by the time that is found, a charge applies as well.
