Can a bin go on your driveway in Pickering?
Yes, on your own land. Pickering asks for no City permit for a bin inside your property line. The grass strip along the street is, in the City’s own words, municipal property and is known as a boulevard, so the end of a driveway where it meets the street can be City land.
On a City road or boulevard, placing a moving container, dumpster or storage bin needs the City’s road occupancy permit. Apply a minimum of seven days prior to occupancy for a regular permit.
The City’s permit does not reach a Regional road. Those belong to the Region of Durham, which names each of them in its own Regional Roads List, so on one of them, ask the Region.

Where is the dump in Pickering, and when is it open?
The Region of Durham’s waste management facilities open to the public are at 1640 Ritson Road North, Oshawa, and in Port Perry and Cannington, and none of them is in Pickering. At the gate, your vehicle crosses weigh scales both entering and exiting, and the cost is worked out at the exit. Payment is by Visa, Mastercard or debit only.
Household hazardous waste, from paint and solvents to propane tanks and batteries, can be dropped off at a waste management facility for free, with a daily limit of 50 litres, or 25 cans, for each vehicle; asbestos is not taken. Keep hazardous waste in a load of its own: if anything in a load carries a charge, the Region charges for the whole load by weight. The Region also has a Household Special Waste Depot at 1998 Bowmanville Avenue, Bowmanville, for household hazardous waste only.
