How much does the Oshawa dump cost?

Right now a load up to 40 kg costs a $7 source [1] flat rate at the Oshawa Waste Management Facility. The Region charges $1.40 source [1] for every 8 kg over 40 kg, and lists its rate by the tonne as $175 per 1,000 kilograms source [1]. Fill — soil, dirt, brick, gravel, rubble, sand, cement and concrete — costs $375 per 1,000 kilograms source [1], and appliances with Freon, such as fridges, freezers and air conditioners, carry a $20 source [1] fee.

Some loads cost nothing: electronics, household hazardous waste within its daily limit, and white foam packaging go in free. Once anything that is charged goes in, the whole load pays by weight, free things too, so bring the free things on a trip of their own.

Your vehicle is weighed on the way in and on the way out, and staff at the exit scale tell you what you owe. Pay by Visa, Mastercard (credit or prepaid) or debit; the site takes no cash, no cheques and no accounts.

What can you take to the Oshawa dump?

The Oshawa Waste Management Facility charges by weight for furniture, appliances, garbage, drywall, wood, carpet and underlay, porcelain bathroom fixtures and scrap metal, and it takes soil, dirt, brick, gravel, rubble, sand, cement and concrete as fill. Electronics, household hazardous waste and white foam packaging go in free, and good paint and stain can go to its paint reuse centre.

It does not take asbestos, ammunition, explosives, flares or commercial hazardous waste. And right now it takes no tires: the Region stopped taking tires at all its facilities on 29 June 2026, until further notice.

Leaf and yard waste goes to the curb instead: the Region no longer accepts it at its facilities and points to the free curbside collection. Brush, hedge and tree trimmings and natural Christmas trees count as yard waste under the Region’s by-law.

Electronics and scrap metal at the Oshawa dump

Electronics recycling is free at the Oshawa Waste Management Facility: the Region takes TVs, desktop computers and their accessories, laptops, tablets, phones, printers and copiers, and audio and video equipment.

Scrap metal is not free: it is weighed and charged like garbage.

Hazardous waste, oil and paint at the Oshawa dump

Household hazardous waste goes in free at the Oshawa Waste Management Facility, with a limit of 50 litres or 25 cans per vehicle a day, and of 40 fluorescent tubes or bulbs. The Region’s list includes motor oil, antifreeze, fuel, batteries, car batteries, paint and solvents, propane tanks, cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, pool chemicals, cooking oil, medicine, mercury thermostats, and syringes in a sealed, puncture-proof container.

Bring it in its original container or a well-marked one, sealed, never mixed with anything else, and packed so nothing spills on the drive.

Good paint and stain can go to the facility’s paint reuse centre, where you can also take some home at no cost, with a limit of five cans per vehicle a day.

Electric vehicle batteries, and e-scooter or e-bike batteries over 12 kg, are not taken either.

Can you take junk to the Oshawa dump yourself?

Yes. The Region’s by-law makes its Waste Management Facilities open to the public for waste drop off, so you can drive a load to the Oshawa site yourself.

Your vehicle crosses a weigh scale on the way in and again on the way out. On the way in, tell the scale house what you have, and staff send you to the right drop-off spot. At the exit scale, staff tell you the cost.

The load has to be in a closed vehicle body or covered with a tarp or net, and leak-proof, so nothing falls out on the way. An unsafe vehicle or a load that isn’t tied down is turned away at the gate, and no one may come in on foot, on a bike, a scooter or a motorcycle.

A business can bring a load too: the by-law has commercial vehicles pay the same fees as household vehicles.

Is there a dump in Pickering, Ajax or Whitby?

Durham runs no public drop-off site in Pickering, Ajax or Whitby. The Region’s public drop-off sites are in Oshawa, Port Perry and Cannington, and its household hazardous waste depot is in Bowmanville.

The Region’s Waste Management Centre on Garrard Road North in Whitby is not one of them: the by-law bars delivering any waste there.

Too much for one trip?

When a load is too big for a car or a trailer, Big Bin can bring a bin to the address. One price covers the delivery, the pickup and 7 days. Clean concrete or clean soil goes in a 14 yard bin of its own, with nothing else in it, for one flat price.

Big Bin delivers bins in Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax and Whitby, in 14, 30 and 40 yard sizes.

The bin size guide shows which size a load needs, what can go in a bin checks it item by item, bin and dumpster rental cost shows what a rental includes, and roll-off bins explained covers how the truck works.

For a renovation, see construction bin rental, or weigh a bin against junk removal. Get a quote for your address and dates.

Household hazardous waste is free, with a limit of 50 litres or 25 cans per vehicle a day, and the paint reuse centre takes or gives up to five cans per vehicle a day. A load of only free things costs nothing; a load with anything charged in it is charged on its whole weight.

Is there a landfill in Oshawa or Whitby?

The Region of Durham’s landfills are all closed, and no one may deliver waste to them. Drop-offs go to its Waste Management Facilities, such as the Oshawa Waste Management Facility at 1640 Ritson Road North.

Does the Oshawa dump take tires?

Not right now. The Region of Durham stopped taking tires at all its Waste Management Facilities, Oshawa’s included, on 29 June 2026, until further notice, because it has more than it can store. Until it takes them again, it asks residents and businesses to keep their tires if they can.
