Where are Hamilton’s Community Recycling Centres?

The centres are on Olympic Drive in Dundas, on Kenora Avenue, and on Kilbride Road on Hamilton Mountain. A Community Recycling Centre is where residents drop off what the curbside pickup doesn’t take.

Every centre also has a reuse shed for household hazardous waste products, where an attendant takes leftover paint, stain and the like, and gives usable cans away.

How much does the Hamilton dump cost?

At a Hamilton centre, garbage costs a minimum of $11.50 source [1] under 100 kg, and $14 source [1] per 100 kg. Shingles pay the same two rates. HST is not included in these fees, and it is added where it applies.

A lot goes in free. Recycling costs nothing, and appliances and scrap metal are free for residential loads, with the metal kept apart from other waste. Yard waste from a Hamilton home is free all year, but a business pays for its yard waste. Household hazardous waste costs nothing to drop off, and a resident can take up to 4 cans of paint, varnish or stain a day from a reuse shed, free.

Furniture, mattresses and other bulk items can be taken to a centre, and there is a cost to get rid of what can’t be donated or recycled. Curbside trash tags are not accepted at the centres. Pay with cash, debit, Mastercard or Visa. A commercial vehicle pays a deposit set by its gross weight: $50 source [1] for one up to 2,500 kg, rising to $400 source [1] for one over 9,000 kg.

What can you take to the Hamilton dump?

Garbage and shingles are charged. Appliances and scrap metal from a home go in free, and tires from cars and small pickups are taken, up to 10 a day. Big rigid plastics are recycled free: large plastic toys, plastic lawn furniture, shelving units, coolers and pet carriers. Clean 2×4s and 2×2s are taken too, and so are wooden logs of 12 to 16 inches, up to 4 feet long.

For yard waste, the centres take brush under 4 feet long, and stumps of 12 to 16 inches, no more than 4 feet long, with the soil knocked off the roots. After the second week of January, a Christmas tree can go to a centre free.

Household hazardous waste is taken from Hamilton residents only, never from a business. Each visit you can bring up to 40 kg of it, or 40 litres if it is liquid, plus 8 fluorescent tubes and 1 thermostat with mercury in it. That includes paint, motor oil, antifreeze, fuel, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, aerosol cans, batteries, fire extinguishers and large, non-refillable barbecue propane cylinders. Bring it in containers you are willing to leave behind, each with some product still in it.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are not accepted. Take the batteries out and bring them to a centre on their own; the alarm itself goes in the garbage.

Concrete, brick, drywall and other renovation waste are not on the City’s list for its centres, so check with the City before you load the car. The by-law turns away soil, rocks, sod and stone, asbestos, ammunition, explosives and fireworks, biohazardous waste, toner and ink cartridges, radioactive waste, and mercury outside a thermometer or thermostat.

Electronics recycling at the Hamilton dump

Electronics go in free at the Dundas, Kenora and Mountain centres, as recycling. The City’s list names computer monitors, digital cameras, DVD players, electronic games, fax machines, printers, radios and stereos, scanners, pagers and VCRs. Monitors go in the monitor bins, and a printer’s toner has to be drained or taken out first.

Before you go to a Hamilton Community Recycling Centre

Is there a dump in Stoney Creek, Dundas or Waterdown?

Dundas has a centre of its own, the Dundas Community Recycling Centre, at 27 Olympic Drive. The City’s Kenora centre is at 460 Kenora Avenue, and its Mountain centre at 37 Kilbride Road on Hamilton Mountain.

The City lists none in Stoney Creek or Waterdown, and Stoney Creek is part of the City of Hamilton, so a Stoney Creek household can take its load to the Dundas, Kenora or Mountain centre.

Too much for one trip?

When a load is too big for a car or a trailer, Big Bin can bring a bin to the address. One price covers the delivery, the pickup and 7 days. Clean concrete or clean soil goes in a 14 yard bin of its own, with nothing else in it, for one flat price.

Big Bin delivers bins in Hamilton, in 14 yard, 30 yard and 40 yard sizes.

The bin size guide shows which size a load needs, what can go in a bin checks it item by item, bin and dumpster rental cost shows what a rental includes, and roll-off bins explained covers how the truck works.

The Hamilton dump: common questions

Is there a landfill in Hamilton?

Yes: the Glanbrook Landfill, which the City calls its only operating landfill site. Residents can drop off their own loads at the Dundas, Kenora and Mountain Community Recycling Centres.

Is the Hamilton dump open on Sundays and holidays?

No. The Dundas, Kenora and Mountain Community Recycling Centres close on Sundays and holidays. They are open Monday to Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Is scrap metal free at the Hamilton dump?

Yes, for loads from a home, at the Dundas, Kenora or Mountain centre. Bundle and tie aluminum siding, eavestroughs and wire fencing, drain the fluids from engine parts, and detach and drain a lawnmower’s engine. A heating oil tank has to be empty and cut in half, and a fridge, freezer or air conditioner should still have its compressor.

Does the Hamilton dump take tires?

Yes, up to 10 a day: tires with or without rims from passenger cars and light trucks. Each tire has to be whole: the centres don’t accept one that has been cut.

Can you take Styrofoam to the Hamilton dump?

Yes, if it is clean. The City’s waste by-law lists expandable polystyrene with no residue on it, such as the packaging from TVs and appliances among what its centres take.
