How much does the Milton dump cost?

Garbage, drywall, appliances, scrap metal, shingles and wood are charged by weight. A load of 150 kg or less pays $10/load source [1], and once a load passes 150 kg it pays $221/tonne source [1], counted on the whole load.

Household yard waste, leaves, brush and woodchips cost $10/load source [1]. Small loads of brick, concrete or rubble with no steel in them cost $10/load source [1], at most 3 loads a year, with commercial loads not accepted, and a dump truck full of it needs approval first. Clean soil or sod costs $10/load source [1], residential loads only.

De-commissioned soil and asbestos also need approval before they come, and each pays by the tonne on its whole weight: the soil at $35/tonne source [1], and asbestos at $442/tonne source [1]. When brick, concrete or rubble has steel rebar or mesh set in it, or a piece measures over one square foot, Halton takes it as garbage, not for recycling.

Electronics, tires and household hazardous waste go in free of charge. The site also sells garbage bag tags at 5 for $10 source [3], a sheet of 5 tags, up to 5 sheets at a time. Bring a card: the site takes debit, Mastercard and Visa, and no cash.

What can you take to the Milton dump?

The Halton Waste Management Site takes garbage, drywall, wood and shingles, and scrap metal and appliances too, all charged by weight at the same rates. Before a lawnmower or other gas-powered tool goes in, drain its gas, oil and other fluids, and oil drums and tanks have to be empty and cut in half.

Brick, concrete and rubble without steel go in by the load, and so do clean soil and sod. A tree trunk or stump still counts as yard waste if it is no more than 2 m long and 1 m across. De-commissioned soil and asbestos come in only after Halton approves the load.

Tires are free, rims or no rims, up to 10 a day. Household hazardous waste is free too, at the site’s Household Hazardous Waste Depot, from households only: 20 litres and 8 fluorescent tubes or bulbs a day at most, and no commercial loads. That includes paints and stains, aerosols, solvents and glues, batteries, household cleaners, pool chemicals, pesticides and garden chemicals, automotive fluids and oil filters, waste cooking oil, and medications and sharps, the sharps in a sealed container.

Electronics recycling at the Milton dump

Electronics go to the site’s Waste & Recycling Depot, free. It takes computers, modems and monitors, TVs and receivers, DVD, VCR and Blu-ray players, stereos and speakers, car stereos included, cell phones and home phones, cameras, camcorders and security cameras, camera drones, printers, copiers and fax machines, printer cartridges, projectors, video game devices, headphones, audio recording equipment, electronic musical instruments, and their cables and chargers.

Wipe your files and accounts off a computer or phone before you bring it: Halton says it is not responsible for personal information left on a device.

Recycling at the Milton dump: sort the load before you go

On the site, the place where electronics are dropped off is what Halton calls its Waste & Recycling Depot. The site’s Household Hazardous Waste Depot takes paint, batteries and chemicals, and beside it a paint and stain reuse depot, open from spring to fall, lets you leave usable paint or take some home free. The Reuse Depot takes things in good condition that can be resold, such as clothing and textiles, housewares, books, toys, seasonal items and antiques.

Halton asks you to sort the load by material before you arrive, for quick and easy unloading. Tie or tarp anything open in the back of the vehicle, and empty any bags or boxes of clean fill, woodchips, brick, concrete or rubble before they go in. Site staff may not help you unload, so if something is heavy, bring a second person.

Is there a dump in Oakville, Burlington or Georgetown?

Oakville, Burlington and Georgetown households are Halton Region’s: the Region is the regional government for Oakville, Burlington, Milton and the Town of Halton Hills, and Georgetown and Acton make up the Town of Halton Hills’ urban centres. Halton Region’s waste site is the Halton Waste Management Site, at 5400 Regional Road 25 in Milton, and it takes loads from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

You can also take household hazardous waste and electronics to a Special Waste Drop-off Day, held during the year for Halton residents only, never for commercial waste, and the Halton Waste Management Site takes both year-round.
